What can bootmod3 do for your N13?

Authorised UK Dealer · Fast digital activation · UK support · Updated October 2026

bootmod3 supports the 1.6-litre N13 versions of the BMW 114i, 116i, 118i, 316i and 320i listed below. Once your car's software support and any unlock requirements are confirmed, you can flash a suitable map through the OBD port using your phone or laptop. The licence is digital; connection equipment is separate.

One engine family, different power: why the N13 tunes so well

BMW used the 1.6-litre turbocharged N13 engine family in several models with different factory outputs. Sharing an engine family does not mean every version has identical hardware or will make the same power after tuning.

Model Years Factory power / torque
114i (F20) 2012–2015 102 PS / 180 Nm
116i (F20) 2011–2015 136 PS / 220 Nm
316i (F30) 2012–2015 136 PS / 220 Nm
118i (F20) 2011–2015 170 PS / 250 Nm
320i EfficientDynamics (F30) 2012–2015 170 PS / 250 Nm

PS means metric horsepower. These are factory figures for the N13 versions shown; other engines were sold under some of the same model names. Confirm the engine and current software before choosing a licence.

bootmod3 publishes gains of up to +85% power and +52% torque for its N13 Stage 1 91 AKI map. Its Stage 1 93 AKI figures are up to +93% power and +55% torque. These are manufacturer maxima across the application, not a promise for every model in the table. A percentage increase depends on the starting output, so do not apply the same maximum to a 102 PS 114i and a 170 PS 118i.

Which petrol should I use? UK pumps use RON (Research Octane Number). US pumps use AKI (Anti-Knock Index), the average of RON and a second test called MON. Both describe resistance to knock; they are different rating systems.

bootmod3 pairs 91 AKI with 95 RON and 93 AKI with 98 RON. For a 93 AKI map in the UK, use petrol labelled 98 or 99 RON and follow the selected map's fuel requirements. Super unleaded can be 97 RON, so the word “super” alone does not make it suitable for a 98 RON requirement. These pairings are bootmod3's map guidance, not an exact conversion that works for every fuel.

The E5 and E10 labels describe maximum ethanol content—5% and 10%—not octane. An E30 map requires the specified ethanol blend; ordinary E5 or E10 petrol is not E30. See bootmod3's fuel guidance, the octane explanation from the EIA and UK E5/E10 guidance.

What bootmod3 actually does

bootmod3 is a cloud-based tuning app. You plug into your car's OBD port under the dashboard, choose a suitable ready-made “off-the-shelf” (OTS) map in the app, and flash it to the engine computer. The map changes the engine calibration to increase performance within the requirements of that map.

  • One OTS map is included with your licence, plus any maps marked “FREE”.
  • Flash different maps, read and clear fault codes, and log live data from the app.
  • You can restore the stock map using the appropriate bootmod3 procedure for your car.

Stage 1 or Stage 2?

Stage 1 Stage 2
Designed for the supported car's standard engine hardware
A starting point for a daily-driven car
Match the map to your fuel
Requires the supporting hardware specified for that map
Further performance for a suitable setup
Check both hardware and fuel requirements before flashing

If your car has standard engine hardware, look at the applicable Stage 1 map first. Connection equipment and any required unlocking are separate from engine performance upgrades. For Stage 2, read the full map description in the app; a higher octane number alone does not make the car ready for it.

What you need before you start

  • A BMW with the N13 engine, with software support and any unlock requirements checked in bootmod3 before purchase.
  • A compatible ENET cable and any device adapter it needs, or the bootmod3 WiFi adapter. Connection hardware is sold separately.
  • A compatible phone, tablet, Windows computer or Mac; use the current bootmod3 app downloads and check the requirements for your device.
  • An internet connection for account setup, licence activation and downloading maps.
  • Suitable battery support while flashing, following the manufacturer's instructions. Start with a healthy, charged battery.

Follow the bootmod3 setup instructions: ignition on, engine off, and do not disconnect the device or interrupt power during a flash. If the app reports an unlock requirement or unsupported software, check with us before proceeding.

What happens after you order

  1. You place your order.
  2. We process it as quickly as possible and email your activation key.
  3. You sign in to bootmod3 and activate the licence for your vehicle.
  4. You connect to your car and confirm that it is ready to flash.
  5. You choose an OTS map that matches your car, hardware and fuel.
  6. You follow the app's instructions to flash the map.

We also try to process orders at weekends when available; otherwise, processing continues on the next working day. The licence is delivered digitally, so there is nothing to post.

How long does it take? Flashing normally takes minutes once setup is complete, but allow time for the initial connection, downloads and support checks. Any required unlocking is a separate step. Your activation email gives you the details you need to get started.

Is it safe?

bootmod3 retains factory engine safeguards, but these cannot guarantee reliability on a worn engine, with unsuitable fuel or with the wrong map. Before increasing performance:

  • Make sure the engine is healthy and well maintained.
  • Have unusual rattles, misfires, warning lights or existing faults checked before tuning.
  • Keep up with servicing and use the fuel specified for your selected map.

Restoring the stock map does not guarantee that tuning history is erased or that warranty cover is unaffected. Check the terms that apply to your car before tuning.

Exhaust burble (pops and bangs)

bootmod3 lists exhaust-burble adjustments for the N13. The available settings and the sound you hear depend on the map, vehicle software and exhaust setup. Use the settings supported by your map rather than assuming a more aggressive setting is suitable for every car.

Keep the car's emissions equipment in place for road use and check that any changes comply with the rules where you drive.

Common questions

Do I need a specific cable?
Use a compatible ENET cable with the correct connection for your device, or the bootmod3 WiFi adapter. A generic Bluetooth OBD reader is not a substitute for the supported flashing equipment.

Can I go back to stock?
Yes, the stock map can be restored using the correct bootmod3 procedure for your car. This does not remove the possible warranty implications of tuning.

Do I need a mechanic?
Supported cars can be flashed from your phone or laptop once they meet the software and unlock requirements. Any required professional unlocking or mechanical work must be completed first.

How do I receive my licence?
We email your activation key after processing your order. The licence is digital; connection equipment is separate.

Which cars are covered?
The N13 versions of the F20 114i, 116i and 118i, and F30 316i and 1.6-litre 320i EfficientDynamics shown in the table. Other engines share some of those badges, so send us your model, year and engine details if you're unsure. We may also need the software information from the bootmod3 app.

Technical references: bootmod3 N13 specifications and published gains; bootmod3 user manual; BMW's factory specifications for the 114i, 116i and 118i, and 316i and 320i EfficientDynamics. Actual map availability and requirements should be checked for your car in the app.
